Time goes by for hundreds of years. Xiangtan Central Hospital was only a clinic (pharmacy) when it was founded in 1900.

After the Opium War, the North American Christian Presbyterian Church sent American missionary Ling Xiaozhi to travel across the oceans to China. He entered Hunan three times and finally chose the bank of Xiangjiang River in Xiangtan City in February 1900 to rent a house and then build a clinic. Subsequently, American doctors, Duke of New York University and other medical doctors came to Tan to join the practice. Thanks to the help of Duke's brother, Lae Sunil Duke, he found a house and built a western hospital in March 1907, with 20 medical beds in the Department ofIntenal Medicine, Surgery and Miscellaneous Diseases, which was the first of its kind in Xiangtan. By 1918, there were four wards, 75 beds, 17,158 outpatient visits and 928 inpatient visits annually.The wards are divided into first, second, and third class. First-class wards are also called special wards. This system continued until the country was liberated.

When the Peoples Government took over in 1951, there were 68 employees, 4 wards, 90 beds, 20, 500 outpatient visits and 1,854 inpatient visits per year. By the mid-1960s, the number of employees had increase to 162, with 250 beds, 184,000 outpatient visits, and more than 5,000 hospitalizations per year. After the reform and opening up, especially in the new century, medical technology and specialty construction have developed rapidly. At the beginning of 2000, there were 976 employees, 706 beds, 19 wards, 36 clinical departments, and 25 medical technology departments, with more than 240,000 outpatient visits and more than 16,000 hospitalizations per year. Up to now, there are 3500 employees with more than 800 having senior professional title in our hospital. 8 experts receive State Council Special Allowance, 3 grant special allowance of provincial and municipal levels, and 1 is credited for Hunan Excellent Specialist. We have 2800 authorized beds and are able to provide medical treatment on 46 clinical subjects and in 15 medical technology departments.
